The Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly has expressed its readiness to relocate traders at the Takoradi Central Market to a temporary structure.
The upcoming exercise, which is intended to pave way for reconstruction of the market circle, starts from Monday February 15 and ends on March 5.
Operators of all commercial vehicles, including that of Ghana Private Road Transport Union, will also now operate from a designated location to ease traffic congestion in the oil city.
The relocation exercise is also to help avoid any obstruction during the reconstruction period.
Phases
According to city officials, there is a time frame for execution of the project, which is in seven phases.
It is in line with this that they said all impediments will be removed to enable the contractor deliver on schedule.
The assembly’s works engineer, Teye Kotei, told journalists at a press conference on Tuesday that the temporary structure was 75 per cent complete.
He said it can accommodate over four hundred traders who have lockable stalls inside the central market.
The works engineer spoke of plans by STMA to raise pavilions for tailors and seamstresses at the temporary structure. He said there will also be pavilions for accessory and jewellery sellers to support the sewing business.
With these and provision of social amenities like good lighting system, toilet facilities and security, he said the traders have no excuse relocating to the temporary structure.
