Plans by government and other benevolent organisations to help resettle displaced victims of last Thursday’s explosion disaster at Apeate, in the Prestea-Huni Valley Municipality of the Western Region, has earnestly begun.
Reports indicate that over 900 residents in the community are homeless, with some currently living in tents and the local church premises, expected to move to a new site within the next two days.
The arrangement comes after government’s pledge to reconstruct the community in order to assuage the suffering of the victims and make their lives comfortable.
New site
According to officials, the new site was created by a mining company to resettle some people in Kumasi, and has basic social amenities like good drinking water and electricity.
However, they maintained that the lack of educational facility at the site will not hinder the resettlement process.
To this end, they said vehicle arrangements will be made available to convey children to school in nearby communities and bring them home.
Information gathered by the Daily Statesman indicates that there was not even a single basic school in Apeate before the explosion. Children of school-going age usually attended school in other nearby communities.
A visit to the community showed a team of government delegation, chiefs and opinion leaders in the municipality gathered to officially approve movement to the new site.
Concerns
Further reports indicate that the number of displaced persons keep rising with some concerned individuals raising eyebrows.
There are speculations that some residents around Apeate, who were not affected by the explosion, are claiming to benefit from the relief items and other packages.
Officials are, therefore, appealing for more relief items because family lines in the destroyed community are huge.
Meanwhile, the Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis has launched an appeal for funds and other items to support the Apeati victims.
Proceeds from this initiative, being championed by Sky Power FM, will be donated to the victims on Friday January 28, 2022.
