The Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, Sammi Awuku, has challenged students of St. Augustine’s College to set ambitious goals, and pursue excellence as they prepare to assume leadership roles in the future.
He made the call while addressing the school’s 96th Anniversary and Speech and Prize-Giving Day celebration, where he served as Chairman of the event.
Mr. Awuku urged the students to take full advantage of the opportunities provided by their education, and cultivate the discipline, values and determination required to succeed in an increasingly competitive world.
The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including the Vice President, Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang; the Archbishop of Cape Coast, Charles Gabriel Palmer-Buckle; members of the school’s governing board; leaders of the St. Augustine’s Past Students Union; as well as parents, teachers and students.
Reputation
Mr. Awuku observed that St. Augustine’s College had built a strong reputation over the years as a centre of academic excellence and leadership development. According to him, the institution has consistently produced distinguished alumni who have gone on to make significant contributions to national and global development.
Reflecting on the school’s legacy, the Akuapem North legislator indicated that its success was rooted in a long-standing commitment to discipline, perseverance and character formation.
He noted that these values were captured in the school’s motto, Omnia Vincit Labor, which means “Perseverance Conquers All.”
Mr. Awuku explained that perseverance remained a vital virtue for success, particularly in a world filled with challenges and uncertainties. He therefore encouraged the students to remain resilient and determined in their pursuit of knowledge and personal development.
Big dreams
He further advised the students to broaden their ambitions beyond academic achievement, and reflect on how they could make meaningful contributions to their communities and the environment.
According to him, the future would belong to young people who were prepared to lead responsibly and contribute positively to society.
To reinforce this message, Mr. Awuku announced the introduction of the Sammi Awuku Change Makers Award, which he said would recognise students and teachers who demonstrate leadership, commitment to sustainability and a passion for driving positive change.
He explained that the award was intended to motivate members of the school community to strive for excellence not only in academics but also in community service and environmental responsibility.
Commendation
Mr. Awuku also commended the teachers and administrators of St. Augustine’s College for their dedication to nurturing the talents and potential of students. He described their mentorship and guidance as a key factor behind the continued success of the institution.
He further encouraged the students to believe in their abilities and raise their aspirations. He reminded them that perseverance, discipline and determination could enable them to achieve remarkable success and contribute to building a better future for Ghana and the wider world.
The celebration marked another milestone in the history of St. Augustine’s College as the institution continues its journey toward a century of shaping leaders guided by the enduring principle that perseverance conquers all.
