Workers at the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly are being shunned by the residents for fear of infecting them with Covid-19.
This follows Ghana Health Service’s description of STMA as an epicentre of the virus in Western Region.
STMA, as used in this context, refers to Sekondi -Takoradi Metropolitan Area, and not the assembly per se.
However, some of the residents, particularly traders, do not seem to understand the issue and are as a result avoiding the assembly workers.
No business
Reports indicate that these traders have, for their safety, resolved not to do business with revenue collectors from STMA.
This, according to Abdul Mumin Issah, the Metropolitan Chief Executive, has adversely affected the assembly’s revenue mobilization.
He says his administration is now cash-strapped and can simply not undertake projects with dwindling Internally Generated Fund.
One of such projects, he says, is work on the Essel Lagoon, which is dear to the hearts of residents of Sekondi.
Sensitization
In an interview with journalists, Abdul Mumin Issah said strenuous efforts are being made to erase the misleading Covid-19 tag on the workers of the assembly.
The MCE noted that although active cases in Sekondi-Takoradi keep rising, there is no way that he can personally go round with cane in hand whipping residents who fail to wear nose masks.
He said he would also not order the police and other security agencies to go after those refusing to observe the safety protocols.
This, he said, is because the crusade against Covid-19 is a collaborative one which cannot be waged by government alone but all the citizenry, including journalists.
It is to this end that he has urged all residents in the oil city to take their destiny into their own hands by strictly adhering to the protocols.
