Some speed rumps constructed by worried residents of Beposo, a busy commercial town on the Accra -Takoradi highway, are causing accidents on the road.
The people’s action was due to failure by the Ghana Highways Authority, for the past two years, to construct speed rumps on the stretch of the road.
Beposo has the biggest market centre in the Shama district of Western Region, with the community always flooded with human and vehicular traffic.
Reports indicate that not less than twenty accidents have been caused by these unapproved speed rumps, with some forty people losing their lives and many others sustaining various degrees of injuries.
Many accidents
The Assembly member for the electoral area, Isaac Boakye, who confirmed this in an interview with journalists, said not less than three accidents occur at Beposo every three days.
He said it was in protest of this unfortunate situation that the angry residents on Saturday February 6 blocked the road for more than three hours.
He regretted that numerous petitions to leadership, including the regional Highways director, the District Chief Executive and the Western Regional Minister, on the need to properly construct the rumps have fallen on deaf ears.
He said the desperate and frustrated residents had no option than to take the law into their own hands by constructing the unapproved rumps on the road to control over speeding of vehicles.
Unfortunately, the Assembly member said, this decision turned out not to be the best because many people are losing their lives from accidents caused by these rumps, with the situation being worst in the night.
He recalled that agitation for construction of the speed rumps by Ghana Highways Authority started in December 2018 when the Beposo toll booth was relocated to Badukrom, a sister community.
Taking advantage
According to Mr Boakye, many private and commercial vehicles are taking undue advantage of the relocation to over speed through Beposo, a situation which compelled the worried residents, who have no technical knowledge in speed rumps construction, to take the take the law into their own hands.
He intimated that although Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, the Regional Minister, pledged during the relocation ceremony that he would ensure that Ghana Highways constructed the speed rumps within two months , this promise is yet to be fulfilled.
