The Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako-Atta, has disclosed that the Akufo-Addo led administration has built over 4,000km of roads, making the President’s contributions in the road sector development “unprecedented since independence in 1957 for our country.”
The Minister announced this on Friday when he presented to Parliament a comprehensive document on the number of roads the Akufo-Addo-led administration had constructed between 2017 and 2021.
His presentation followed a directive given by the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei-Owusu, to the Minister to furnish the House with the data on the total number of roads the Akufo-Addo government had constructed since assuming office.
According to the Minister, between 2017 and 2021 the Akufo-Addo government constructed roads totaling 4,263.37 km across the country.
“The Speaker mandated me to bring proof of what I was talking about. I had no choice than to comply. So Mr Speaker, I have compiled all the roads intervention between 2017 and 2021 and it totals 4263.37km,” he said.
He also explained that because his Ministry wanted to offer prima facie evidence of what it had done, it had broken the road interventions into regions, covering all the 16 regions of the country. He added that it had also went further to itemise all the road activities that constituted that total number.
“Over 4,000km roads have been constructed under Akufo-Addo’s government. He has done marvelously well, and his performance in the road sector is unprecedented since independence in 1957 for our country,” he noted.
A working gov’t
The Akufo-Addo government has been embarking on the ‘Year of Roads’ initiative for the past three years as part of his desire to improve on the road networks in the country. He has declared 2022 as the third year of roads.
In a tweet on Wednesday January 5, 2022, the President announced that his government would continue to see to the construction of several roads in various parts of the country.
“Roads, roads and more roads. It’s the #YearOfRoads,” he briefly stated.
Describing the year as a “boom in road sector”, he disclosed that nine highways, seven bridges and five interchanges would be constructed.
According to the Ministry of Highways, the government will commence work on nine new major road projects in parts of the country.
The Akufo-Addo government will also “complete many others that are at advanced stages of completion”.
In January last year, the President once again committed to bridging the road infrastructure deficit in the country.
Declaring 2021 as the second ‘Year of Roads’, he pledged to prioritise road construction to ensure that a significant number of kilometres across the country are tarred.
He admitted that “there are still many more kilometres to construct,” hence government’s consistent efforts.
“We defined last year as the year of roads; this year [2021] will be the second year of roads. As we continue in our focus of dealing with the deficit in road infrastructure,” he had said while delivering his inaugural speech after being sworn in to commence his second tenure in office.
