As President John Dramani Mahama readies to deliver Ghana’s statement at the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called on him to use the global platform to speak boldly on behalf of ordinary Ghanaians and present credible solutions to the pressing challenges confronting the nation.
In a statement signed by the party’s General Secretary, Lawyer Justin Kodua Frimpong, the NPP highlighted the devastating impact of illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, on Ghana’s environment and communities. According to the party, rivers that once sustained thousands of households, such as the Ayensu at Kwanyako in the Central Region, have become so polluted that water treatment plants are shutting down. It further lamented the destruction of forests, farmlands, and biodiversity, stressing that the livelihoods of future generations are at risk.
The statement recalled that President Mahama himself had previously criticised others for failing to address the menace, insisting that the urgency once demanded by figures within his administration, including calls by the current Foreign Minister for a state of emergency, must be applied now more than ever. Beyond environmental concerns, the NPP drew attention to the country’s economic difficulties, marked by high living costs, limited job opportunities, and growing insecurity. It also cited reports of excessive force by security agencies and a decline in public trust in state institutions as issues demanding presidential attention.
The NPP therefore urged President Mahama to outline a firm plan to end illegal mining and restore Ghana’s water bodies, commit to economic policies that reduce household pressures and create jobs, reaffirm the country’s dedication to human rights and accountable governance, and secure genuine international cooperation to advance these goals. “The UN General Assembly offers a valuable opportunity to demonstrate leadership, not just abroad but at home,” the statement noted. It also pledged the party’s readiness to support any sincere initiative that protects the environment, strengthens the economy, and upholds the dignity of Ghanaians.
