
Overlord of Dagbon, Ya Na Abukari II
The Overlord of Dagbon Traditional Kingdom, His Royal Majesty Ndan Yaa Naa Abubakari II, has constituted a committee to review the Dagbon Constitution in order to propel development and consolidate peace in the area.
The Dagbon Constitution, created over 90 years ago, contains rules, regulations and customs of the Dagbon kingdom.
The committee, made up of 15 prominent personalities of Dagbon, and led by the Kuga Naa Abdulai Adam, is expected to review and amend some parts of the Dagbon Constitution.
Other members of the committee include the paramount chief of Savelugu, Yoo Naa Yakubu Abdulai; Mion Lana Abdulai Mahama, Tolon Naa Rtd Major Suleman; Karaga Naa Abdulai Nantogmah; Gushegu Naa Abdulai Mahamudu Shitobu, and other eminent chiefs in Dagbon.
Time
The committee is expected to finish its work by March 2021.
Speaking to the Daily Statesman from Tamale, the chairman of the committee, Kuga Naa Abdulai Adam, said Dagbon is now peaceful and therefore the need to review and amend its Constitution.
According to him, with the relative peace in Dagbon, he is very optimistic that the sons and daughters of Dagbon will rally behind the Overlord so as to ensure lasting peace in the area.
He added that the committee was set up to look into various issues concerning the development of Dagbon.
The review committee chairman noted that some parts of the constitution will be amended and other inputs will be made as well.
He revealed that amending the Dagbon Constitution will undoubtedly bring all matters of chieftaincy conflicts and land disputes to rest. He added that for Dagbon to consolidate its current peace, the Constitution must be reviewed to remove bottlenecks that impede the area’s development.
Call for support
Nyab Kugu Naa noted that due to the magnitude of the exercise, the committee, in the wisdom of the Overlord of Dagbon, invited three governmental organisations to support the exercise, saying these organisations will help fast-track the review of the Dagbon Constitution.
“At the beginning, when we had a traditional council meeting, that was when Naa Gbewaa set up the review committee to look into the review of the Dagbon Constitution to ensure peaceful co-existence in the kingdom. There are a lot in the constitution to be reviewed,” he said.
The Executive Director of NORSAAC, Awal Mohammed Awal, a member of the committee, said the review of the Dagbon Constitution is a step in the right direction.
