There appears to be a mad rush for the Municipal and District Chief Executive positions in the Bono Region, as 114 individuals have submitted their applications for consideration for the 12 positions in the region.
While some people say the situation confirms the large array of fine brains in the governing New Patriotic Party, others contend the number of persons seeking to occupy these positions are simply on the high side.
David Owusu Ansah, a political analyst, observed in an interview that there is absolutely nothing wrong with the number, saying that would afford the appointing authority the opportunity to select from a wide-range of talents for the benefit of the people.
Speaking to the media, the NPP Bono Regional Director of Communications, Asare-Bediako Seth, said there was no cause for worry about the “seemingly large number of people who have expressed interest in these positions.”
“All the applicants are very competent to occupy the positions, but only one person will be finally chosen for each district. What’s important is that at end of the day, the President would settle on the competent and hard-working ones to help him realize his vision and aspirations,” he stated.
Tain District has the highest number of contestants, with as many as 15 distinguished individuals having their eyes keenly the DCE position. This is followed by the Jaman South where 14 persons are also vying for the position.
Breakdown of the 12 MDAs in the region and number of their respective prospective MDCE aspirants are: Jaman North – 12; Jaman South – 14; Dormaa West – 7; Dormaa Central – 5; Dormaa East – 4; Banda – 11; Tain – 15; Sunyani – 6; Sunyani West – 7; Berekum East – 10; Berekum West – 8; and Wenchi – 5.
Sunyani municipality
Of considerable interest to many is who becomes the Sunyani Municipal Chief Executive, the position which, until recently, was occupied by the current Bono Regional Minister, Justina Owusu Banahene.
The Sunyani East NPP constituency chairman, Frank Musah Damtarl, together with the constituency secretary, Ansu Kumi, are in the race together with the Spokesperson and Special Aide to the Regional Minister, Clement Bonsu.
Also in race are Dr Kofi Bobi Barimah, the Acting Executive Director of the Centre for Plant Medicine Research and two others, namely Frank Opoku Adjapong and Kwaku Antwi-Agyei.
From the information gathered, especially through social media platforms, it appears Dr Bobi Barimah is the lead contender, but sources close to the regional secretariat of the NPP believe “each of the contestants could be nominated finally”.
Mr Alex Ofori, a Senior Lecture at the Sunyani Technical University, who is one the main contenders in the Tain District, told the Daily Statesman that he was very hopeful the President would pick him over the others owing his long-standing loyalty and immense contributions to the party over the years.
