The Coastal Development Authority (CODA) has said it liaised with relevant institutions in charge of state monuments before embarking on the renovation works at the Asomdwe Park.
The Authority has therefore denied tampering with the tomb of the former President, the late John Evans Atta Mills.
This was contained in a statement signed by the Chief Executive of the Authority, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, responding to accusations by the family of former President John Evans Atta Mills that no family member was contacted before the renovation works.
On the claims by the family that the Authority, together with the Atta Mills Institute, had desecrated the body of the late President, CODA categorically stated that “the grave was not opened and therefore, no desecration of the body of the former President, H.E John Evans Atta Mills, has taken place.”
Portions of the statement indicated the Authority had only been undertaking some renovation works at the burial grounds of the late Professor Atta Mills.
“The Coastal Development Authority, acting upon a directive from the President Akufo-Addo, prioritized the renovation of the burial grounds of the late Professor Atta Mills, former President of the republic. The Authority liaised with relevant state institutions in charge of state monuments before embarking on the renovation works,” it added.
CODA said it have completed the following projects at the Asomdwe Park: the redesign and construction of ICT lab, library, cafeteria and artifact buildings, construction of a concrete shed and replacement of alucobond panels over tomb of the late President, construction of fence wall and two restrooms for security staff, construction of entrance for General Public & VIPs and paving of 50-metre walkway to and around the tomb with porcelain tiles.
It added that the asphalting of the driveway to general entrance and landscaping of general area around the tomb were currently ongoing.
“We, therefore, assure all well-meaning Ghanaians that the project, which continues to be a top priority for CODA, is well on schedule and will be handed over to the Office of the President for official commissioning, once completed,” the statement concluded.
