Bawumia files nomination today

Vice-President Mahamadu Bawumia is expected to submit his completed nomination forms for the flagbearer contest of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) at the party’s headquarters in Asylum Down, Accra, today.

The filing of his nomination sets the stage for an intense internal competition within the NPP, as Dr. Bawumia is expected to face stiff competition from other presidential hopefuls who are also vying for the flagbearer position.

Dr Bawumia will be the second aspirant to file his nomination forms, after Alan Kyerematen, former Trade and Industry Minister, who was the first among the 11 aspirants who had picked forms to contest the party’s presidential primaries.

In a statement released by his campaign team, Dr. Bawumia expressed his excitement about the upcoming contest and his commitment to the success of the NPP.

The Vice-President also urged party members to support his candidacy and work together to ensure the party’s victory in the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.

Dr Bawumia said the time had come to re-position the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in a manner that engenders hope, trust and confidence, “both in ourselves and the larger Ghanaian community in order to break the eight.”

That, he said, had become paramount due to the socio-economic hardships faced by the nation as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war.

“We have not had it all rosy and delivered everything that we set out to do from our day of initiation into office. But the setbacks notwithstanding, we have produced a solid track record of achievements,” Dr Bawumia said at a recent conference in London.

The NPP presidential hopeful urged party members to reject claims that the party would have no message to persuade voters. “Let nobody tell you that we don’t have a message for 2024. I must hasten to add that this does not mean we have done everything we intended to do or ought to have done. There is clearly a lot more to do and we will work hard to do more,” he intimated.

Dr Bawumia said the NPP government, led by President Nana Akufo-Addo, had achieved a lot with the introduction of problem-solving policy initiatives, and mentioned some of them as the Ghana Card, Tax Identification Number (TIN), National Health Insurance Number, and construction of the Elmina Fishing Harbour.

The ultimate winner among the NPP presidential aspirants will lead the party into the 2024 general elections, where they will seek to secure a third consecutive term in office.

With the nomination process officially underway, all eyes are now on the NPP as the party embarks on an important decision-making process that will shape the future of the party and Ghana as a whole.
