Following the April, 2023, visit to the country by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, Edgars Rinkevics, as part his country’s commitment to deepening cooperation with Ghana, an official of a Latvia company that produces organic fertilizer, peat moss, among others, has visited the country to explore business opportunities in the agricultural sector.
In an interview with the Daily Statesman yesterday, Roberts Leitans, Chief Executive Officer of Hortimed Limited, said he sees a lot of prospects in Ghana’s agricultural sector.
“There is a growing market in Africa, including Ghana, with a huge potential for the use of organic fertilizer and other related agricultural products. And I am excited to be in the country, exploring the opportunities available and see how our company can also support Ghana’s agricultural development,” Mr Leitans said.
Production capacity
He said with a production capacity around 100,000 metric tonnes a month, Hortimed Limited exports organic fertilizer, peat moss and related products to more than 50 countries worldwide.
“We already have a presence in some African countries, including Libya, Tanzania, Algeria, Kenya, South African, and Ghana is coming on board. We are particularly excited to be entering the Ghanaian market because the climate is good, and since I first entered the country, I have found the people of Ghana very nice and friendly,” Mr Leitans said.
He added: “The good thing for the Ghanaian farmer is that our product is produced from unique raw materials from the lakes in Northern Europe, and has the huge potential of helping the farmers in Ghana to increase their yields.”
He disclosed that Hortimed Limited had already signed a partnership agreement with a local company, Agrofert Blue Ghana Limited, for the distribution of their products in the country.
According to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Agrofert Blue Ghana Limited, George Quansah, samples of the company’s organic fertilizer are already in the process of testing by the Plant Protection and Regulatory Services Directorate of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, as part of the preparation for the grant of permit to export the product into the country.
