The Municipal Education Director for Abuakwa South, Mrs. Comfort Ofori Appiah, has disclosed that the performance of Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates in the Municipality has improved over the last two years due to the influence of the Kingsley Science and Maths Quiz.
She expressed optimism that this year, the Municipality will achieve single-digit scores in the BECE and further enhance its previous performance.
“Last year, 2022, the BECE results, as analyzed, was 67.17 percent. We are yet to receive the standardized test by Basic 2 and Basic 4. But we are hopeful that the performance will be massive,” she noted.
She made this observation last Friday at the auditorium of the Kibi Presbyterian College of Education during the finals of the Kingsley Quizzes comprising the Kingsley Spelling Challenge and Kingsley Science and Math Quiz.
She stated that while the government has taken it upon itself to improve infrastructure in education across the country, it is very gratifying to see people like Dr Agyemang doing their best to complement these efforts.
“I believe Dr Agyemang hasn’t exhausted his ideas in terms of education in this municipality and I also call on others to come on board. We have other interventions we want to enrol like the reading intervention at the lower level,” she said, calling on the students to take advantage of the various quizzes.
Commitment
Dr. Kingsley Agyemang, Registrar of the Ghana Scholarships Secretariat, urged the students not to be complacent but to keep striving for higher goals. He expressed his belief in the potential for greatness within each of them, emphasizing that achieving it would require dedication and hard work.
“You are lucky to have all these educational interventions at your disposal and the best you can do is to take advantage of them and be great men and women for Mother Ghana. Some of us did not have this opportunity but with determination and hard work, we succeeded, how much more you who are having all these interventions and tools at your disposal”, he said.
He assured the students that his dedication to education was unwavering, and he would spare no effort to continuously enhance the quality of education in the Municipality.
Winners
Asiakwa Roman Catholic Basic School and Bunso M/A Junior High School won the Kingsley Spelling Challenge and Kingsley Science and Math Quiz respectively.
The Kingsley Spelling Challenge, which is in its third year, saw three schools namely; Akosua Agyeiwaa Memorial Methodist Basic, Kibi M/A Experimental Basic and Asiakwa R/C Basic Schools shrugging off competition from some 72 primary schools within the municipality to get to the finals.
The Kingsley Science and Maths Quiz also had Bunso M/A JHS emerging winners with KPCE Demonstration and Akosua Agyeiwaa Methodist JHS taking the first and second runners-up positions respectively.
Honour
The Abuakwa South Educational Directorate used the occasion to honour Dr Agyemang for his enormous investments in education in the Municipality.
He was honoured on the premise of his social interventions such as Kingsley Science and Maths Quiz, Time with Kingsley, Kingsley Spelling Challenge, Kingsley Free vacation classes, provision of free food and buses for BECE candidates, among others.
