Rt Rev. Prof J.O. Y. Mante, outgoing PCG Moderator
The Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG) is expected to hold an election for a new Moderator of its General Assembly during its upcoming General Assembly.
The tenure of the current Moderator, Rt. Rev. Prof J.O. Y Mante, will come to an end in November, 2023.
In a pastoral letter issued to the various congregations, he announced that the Church’s 23rd General Assembly would be held at the Ramseyer Congregation at Abetifi-Kwahu in the Eastern Region from 16th to 20th August 2023. It will be held under the theme “Jesus Christ, the Alpha, and the Omega (Revelation 21: 6)”.
The letter announced that the General Assembly is expected to bring together about 300 Commissioners and Corresponding Members from all the 21 Presbyteries of the Church. It added that the General Assembly will also host a number of dignitaries from both home and abroad.
Vice-President Mahamdu Bawumia is expected to be the Guest of Honour at a grand durbar slated for Saturday, where awards will be presented to deserving members of the PCG for the exceptional services they have rendered towards the forward march of the Church.
“Beloved in our Lord Jesus Christ, this year’s General Assembly is a special one because, in this Assembly, a new Moderator will be elected to take over from me, as I bring my five years’ Moderatorial tenure to an end this year on the midnight of 30th November 2023. As we prepare to elect a new Moderator, I encourage everyone to learn from the election of Mathias in the early church in Acts 1:13-26,” portions of the letter read.
Caution
Rt Rev. Prof J.O. Y. Mante thanked God for his unending mercies towards all creation, including humankind, noting that “irrespective of all the challenging times that this world finds itself in – diseases, economic turmoil, political unrest, etc –God has not forsaken His word and His Church”.
The letter urged all PCG members to spend time in prayer and fasting for God to choose a new Moderator for Himself and for His Church.
The Moderator also implored all PCG members to keep silent at this time, and give the Church space to hear and to discern God’s will for His Church on this important matter of election a new leader.
He particularly warned those “who sometimes pretend that they have the power to choose leaders for God’s Church, either through verbal force or through ‘prophetic hijacking’” to desist from the practice.
