Ms. Claudine Sigam, Interim Director General of the African Minerals Development Centre (AMDC) of the African Union, has called for stronger collaboration among African countries and key stakeholders to shape a sustainable future for the continent’s minerals and energy sectors.
Speaking at the Future of Energy Conference 2026 held at the Labadi Beach Hotel in Accra, Ms. Sigam highlighted the importance of Africa leveraging its vast natural resources to drive economic transformation, industrialization and sustainable development.
However, Ms. Sigam stressed the need for stronger partnerships, effective policies and greater African ownership in the development and utilisation of the continent’s mineral and energy resources.
She emphasised that a competitive and reliable energy system was essential to enable Africa to process its minerals locally and move beyond the export of raw materials.
“We need competitive energy to transform minerals into materials, and we need the industrial capabilities to transform those materials into products and markets capable of sustaining those industries,” she said.
She commended the African Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP) for the continued efforts to support Africa’s energy transition, stressing the importance of collective action in shaping the continent’s energy and minerals future.
