The University Teachers for Free SHS Ghana, an advocacy group comprising university lecturers championing the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy, has taken its campaign to Charia, a hamlet within the Wa Central Constituency. Joined by some New Patriotic Party (NPP) constituency executives and the party’s parliamentary candidate for Wa Central, Hajia Ummu, the group engaged with the local community to rally support for the NPP in the upcoming general elections.
The outreach, held in the heart of the Charia electoral area, focused on grassroots interaction. Members of the group took turns addressing the residents, sharing insights about the achievements of the NPP government, particularly in education, and emphasizing the transformative impact of the Free SHS policy on families across the country.
Advocacy for change
The teachers called on the people of Charia to support Hajia Ummu as their parliamentary candidate and Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the presidential candidate in the 2024 elections. Their message was clear: Wa Central deserves a new direction and leadership committed to sustained development.
“Together, it is POSSIBLE!” they declared, urging the local populace to seize the opportunity to effect change by voting out the incumbent Member of Parliament, Rashid Pelpuo of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). According to the group, the NPP’s vision for Wa Central, led by Hajia Ummu, aligns with the aspirations of the people and builds on the foundations laid by the government’s social interventions.
Game-changer
The teachers group highlighted the significance of the Free SHS policy. They explained its role in reducing the financial burden on parents, improving access to secondary education, and contributing to human capital development nationwide. They argued that the policy has benefitted rural communities like Charia and urged residents to support a government that prioritizes education and development.
The lecturers remarked, “The Free SHS policy is a testament to the NPP’s commitment to empowering the youth through education. It is a policy that has lifted many families from poverty and created opportunities for a brighter future. Let us secure this progress by voting wisely.”
Engaging with grassroots
The visit to Charia also included one-on-one interactions between the teachers and residents. Community members shared their concerns about challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, limited job opportunities, and access to healthcare. The advocacy group and the NPP representatives assured the people that these issues are central to the party’s development agenda for Wa Central.
Call to action
As the group wrapped up its campaign in Charia, they left the community with a resounding message of hope and unity. “This is not just about elections; it is about the future of our children and the development of our community,” said one of the lecturers.
The advocacy group plans to continue its outreach across other communities in the Wa Central Constituency, reinforcing its call for change and the need to vote for the NPP to secure the gains of policies like Free SHS.
