Dr. Ekua Amoakoh
Dr. Ekua Amoakoh, Deputy Spokesperson for former Vice-President and NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has emphasised the urgent need for professionals within the party to take direct responsibility for strengthening its grassroots base ahead of the 2028 elections.
In an exclusive chat with the Daily Statesman, Dr. Amoakoh called on influential NPP members, including teachers, lawyers, journalists, and former public officials, not to leave grassroots mobilisation solely to formal committees but to actively apply their expertise to galvanise the rank and file.
“It is non-negotiable that we make the grassroots feel our presence, engage them meaningfully, and win over the bases. Every member of the NPP, especially those with professional experience and organisational skills, has a role to play in ensuring our base is strong, motivated, and strategically organised. We cannot wait for structures alone to do the work. This is about taking personal responsibility for our party’s growth and future. We can’t afford to lose the 2028 general elections, and it would be a fulfilled dream to see Dr. Bawumia become Ghana’s President,” Dr. Amoakoh stated.
Don’t neglect base
Dr. Amoakoh noted that while following the party’s elected leaders, including flagbearer Dr. Bawumia, is essential, and not beyond normal, members must not neglect the foundational structures that sustain the party’s electoral strength. “The base is the heartbeat of the NPP. Without an engaged, informed and energised grassroots, no campaign can succeed,” she added.
Dr. Amoakoh cited practical examples of how professionals can contribute to grassroots mobilisation. She mentioned that, teachers, for instance, can organise community forums to educate voters on policy issues and civic responsibilities, while lawyers and past appointees can provide guidance on election law, ensuring that local party activities adhere to regulations. She added that journalists and media professionals can help amplify the party’s message, correct misinformation, and showcase success stories from constituencies across the country.
Working hand-in-hand
She also emphasised the importance of working hand-in-hand with local party structures such as polling stations, constituency offices and regional branches. “Direct engagement at the grassroots level is key. Professionals should not sit in offices waiting for reports. They must visit communities, attend local meetings, and encourage participation at every level,” Dr. Amoakoh said.
According to her, some of the NPP’s previous successes in regions like Ashanti, Greater Accra, and Eastern were partly due to hands-on engagement by professionals who ensured that every polling station had trained, motivated volunteers. Dr. Amoakoh, therefore, believed that replicating such models across the country would give the NPP a competitive edge as it prepares for the next electoral cycle.
“Let us all commit to working with the NPP base strategically and professionally. Every community, every polling station, and every supporter matters. Our collective effort will ensure that the NPP not only wins elections but builds a legacy of disciplined, informed and empowered membership,” she stressed.
She further underscored the urgent need for a coordinated effort across all New Patriotic Party (NPP) structures to fortify the party’s grassroots operations. She noted, “Every NPP executive, regional coordinator and grassroots member, has a role to play in fortifying our operations. From constituency offices to local branches, all structures must be functional and aligned. We need strategies that engage citizens meaningfully and communicate our development agenda clearly.”
She stressed that engaging the grassroots is paramount, highlighting the need to prioritise youth and women in the party’s mobilisation efforts. “Our programmes must reach communities across the country,” she said, adding that such engagement is essential for building confidence and trust among Ghanaians as the nation approaches the 2028 elections.
Unity as a pillar
On the issue of party unity, Dr. Amoakoh emphasised that it was time to set aside internal differences, rally behind the flagbearer, and demonstrate that the NPP is prepared, organised and committed to delivering results for all Ghanaians.
“Our strength lies in unity. A disciplined, united party is better positioned to execute its programmes and connect meaningfully with voters,” she said.
Dr. Amoakoh also outlined key elements of the party’s campaign strategy. “Intensive planning, training of local executives, and enhanced digital outreach will form the backbone of our campaign. Every action we take now is to ensure that the NPP enters 2028 as a disciplined and united force capable of securing broad voter support and winning power from the reckless NDC administration,” she further indicated.
