The Assembly Member for the Wasa Nananko Electoral Area, Hon. Pious Ampong, has raised concerns over what he describes as an unauthorized construction of a kindergarten block at Wasa Akropong A by the Wasa Amenfi East Municipal Assembly.
In a press statement issued on Thursday, Hon. Ampong indicated that the ongoing project does not form part of the approved municipal composite budget for the year. According to him, the official budget statement approved by the General Assembly makes no provision for the construction of a kindergarten facility at the said location.
He explained that the only kindergarten projects captured in the approved budget are sited at Wasa Afransie and Subri Nkotie, while a junior high school block has been earmarked for Wasa Adondoi. The Assembly Member maintained that any development outside these approved allocations raises serious concerns about adherence to established financial and administrative procedures.
Hon. Ampong further referenced provisions within the Public Financial Management Act and the Local Governance Act, stressing that all public expenditures must be duly authorized and reflected in the approved budget before execution. He noted that failure to comply with these legal requirements undermines transparency and weakens public confidence in local governance structures.
He has therefore called on the Municipal Assembly to immediately suspend all works on the project and provide full disclosure on the source of funding and the approvals backing the construction. He also urged that the matter be referred to the appropriate sub committee for further scrutiny.
While reiterating his support for the expansion of educational infrastructure within the Nananko area, Hon. Ampong emphasized that such initiatives must be guided by due process and proper planning. He cautioned that projects undertaken outside the approved budget framework could distort development priorities and erode trust between the Assembly and the communities it serves.
The Assembly Member has also appealed to the Municipal Coordinating Director, the Municipal Chief Executive, and the Western Regional Coordinating Council to investigate the situation and ensure strict compliance with the budget statement approved by the General Assembly late last year.
