Minority Leader of Parliament and Member of Parliament for Effutu Constituency, Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has stated that the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, represents not just continuity of the Danquah–Dombo–Busia tradition, but a direct inheritance of its founding political and ideological vision.
Speaking at the Young Commons Forum (YCF) of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and Kumasi Technical University (KsTU) on Saturday, 20 June 2026, under the theme, “Honouring the Foundations, Building the Future: The Danquah–Dombo–Busia Legacy as a Blueprint for Modern Prosperity,” Osahen Afenyo-Markin said reflected on the historical evolution of the tradition, arguing that Dr. Bawumia’s leadership embodies a generational transmission of ideas that have shaped the party’s identity since the era of Chief Simon Dombo and the early independence political movements.
According to him, Dr. Bawumia “leads this tradition into government, not merely inspired by Dombo’s vision, but he inherited it,” stressing that the NPP’s current trajectory is firmly rooted in a living political legacy rather than abstract historical reference.
Afenyo-Markin urged party members and supporters to take the message to their communities, insisting that the NPP remains “Ghana’s foremost architect of social transformation,” citing its historical record in governance and policy reforms as evidence of its enduring developmental philosophy.
He further described Dr. Bawumia’s candidacy as a continuation of what he described as a “tested tradition of governance,” one that prioritises social mobility, economic empowerment and institutional reform through a blend of market-driven policy and social protection systems.
The Minority Leader maintained that the current phase of the tradition reflects a shift towards innovation-driven governance, particularly through digitalisation, fiscal discipline and private-sector-led growth, which he said are necessary responses to Ghana’s contemporary economic challenges.
He added that the party’s message remains one of continuity, arguing that the NPP’s ideological foundation has not been disrupted, but strengthened, as it moves into a new political and economic era under Dr. Bawumia’s leadership.
