The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), together with other transport unions in Koforidua, Eastern Regional, have formed a task force to monitor passengers who patronise their services in the region.
The task force’s job is to enforce and ensure that passengers abide by all the safety protocols announced by the President and the Ghana Health Service to curb the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.
The task force, named ‘Covid-19 Protocol Enforcement Task Force’, among others, will ensure that passengers wear their nose masks properly and also wash their hands before boarding any vehicle, as part of the drivers’ unions’ “No nose mask No entry” directive.
National directive
According to Johnson Kyere, the Eastern Regional Chairman of GPRTU, “the directive states that the compulsory wearing of face masks by drivers, their mates, porters, and the traveling public must be enforced.”
“Veronica hand washing buckets and sanitizers must be made available at various lorry terminals for passengers. Also a task force must be formed for enforcement, and a jingle is to be played continuously to educate passengers and drivers to adhere to the preventive protocols of the virus,” he added.
Mr Kyere said they were cooperating with other driver unions to communicate same to their drivers for strict compliance, adding that any driver or driver’s mate found without wearing a nose mask or picks a passenger who refuses to wear a nose mask would be punished.
Obedience
Meanwhile, some of the drivers have assured that they are ready to abide by the new directives to ensure that the transport sector is safe and free from the deadly coronavirus pandemic.
They however called for collaboration and adherence from passengers to ensure that they both keep a cordial relationship until the pandemic is over.
