One of the attacked vehicles
A gang of eight armed robbers operating in the Kwaebibirem Municipality of the Eastern Region last Thursday night attacked some passengers in the area, holding them hostage for several hours.
According to reports, the robbers blocked the road between Akyem Asuom and Kade with logs, stopping all approaching vehicles for their operation.
Shooting
A victim of the incident, Abubakari Sule, a driver who was travelling with six persons onboard his Honda CRV from Asuom to Kade, told the police that they found out the road had been blocked with logs upon reaching some a section of it.
He added that he knew the police wouldn’t block the road with those items.
He said he then slowed down and all of a sudden about eight armed robbers came out from the bush wearing masks, held them hostage, ordered them to come out from their vehicle and further asked them lie on the ground, amidst shooting into their car.
“Two of the armed robbers were holding pump-action guns, and they shot at us several times causing damage to the vehicle’s windscreen and deflating the tyres,” he added.
A Catholic Priest, Rev Father Emmanuel Angmor, who was on his way back from Abbam on a missionary assignment was also attacked by the armed robbers while driving in his Nissan Pick-up vehicle with registration No. GN 8091-14 at about 7:25 pm.
The Roman father told the police that he was returning from Abaam to Asuom when he met the armed robbers numbering about six, with two of them holding pump-action guns.
He said the robbers started shooting at his vehicle immediately they saw him, damaging his vehicle’s back windscreen as well as the front tyre of the driver’s side.
Police intervention
The Asuom District Police officer, DSP Stephen Abanga, told the Daily Statesman that he quickly mobilized about four of his men when he had the information, and proceeded to the crime scene. He added, however, that upon arrival, the armed robbers had already fled the scene.
The police patrolled the area and found some BBB cartridges but none of the robbers were found.
The police went back with three unused and three empty shells of BBB cartridges to the station.
Meanwhile, the police have since been patrolling the area to provide security for the passengers using the road.
