Okuapehene (with the spade) cuts sod for the library project
The Okuapehene, Oseadeeyo Kwasi Akuffo Ababio III, has cut sod for the construction of an ultra-modern library complex at Akropong in the Eastern Region. The library project is to be sponsored by The Rebecca Foundation.
The project is scheduled to be completed within a period of five months. When completed, the library will take 40 people at a time.
The project will also house an IT centre. The IT centre will also accommodate additional 40 people at a time, bringing the total number of people the complex can accommodate at a time to 80.
The project forms part of the initiative by the First Lady, Rebecca Akufo-Addo, through the Rebecca Foundation, to provide some communities with ultra-modern library facilities. The facility would be stocked with books on varied subjects as well as computers and internet facility to enable students and teachers engage in informational and educational internet-based research.
Effective use
Cutting sod for the construction to begin, the Okuapehene said the project, when completed, would go a long way to provide the needed educational materials for the students in the area. He said the best form of legacy anybody can leave a group of people is to help them to acquire knowledge. This is because, according to him, knowledge is the only property that when given to someone cannot be taken again.
He encouraged parents to allow their children to patronise the library, when completed, saying library environment provides the needed conducive atmosphere that ensures effective learning without distractions.
Commitment
Akosua Newman, a representative from the Rebecca Foundation, said the Foundation is committed to supporting education. She said the Foundation would continue to provide teaching and learning facilities across the country.
Since its inception in 2017, the Rebecca Foundation has spearheaded and completed the construction of eight libraries; assisted schools with teaching and learning materials; and supported children from across the country to undergo urgent medical interventions. It has also resourced many orphanages in the country.
In addition, the Foundation has trained about 200 women in the Eastern and the Northern regions in entrepreneurship, including beads and batik making.
