Some members in the Takoradi Municipal Assembly have asked Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, the acting Mayor, to furnish them with receipts of street lighting bulbs recently distributed in part of the city as evidence of purchasing them from his personal coffers.
The Assembly members say they will readily applaud the acting Mayor for his kind gesture, and also apologise for accusing him of sidelining their electoral areas if he fulfils their demand. They have expressed doubt about his ability to provide that receipt, insisting that “the bulbs were never purchased from his personal coffers”.
The members, led by Mr Michael Doku, Assembly Member for Airport Ridge, say they have concrete evidence to prove that the bulbs were acquired from Ministry of Energy.
Mr Okyere Darko-Mensah, the Western Regional Minister and Member of Parliament for Takoradi, had recently distributed street lighting bulbs to Assembly members in the constituency to light up their respective electoral areas.
Reports indicate that some of them had one hundred pieces, with others having twenty, while others were excluded because of their constant criticisms of the acting Mayor.
“This has resulted in forceful demand and protest. There are whispers that they cannot complain since the bulbs were purchased from the acting Mayor’s own personal coffers,” reports revealed.
In interview on a local radio station yesterday, Mr Michael Doku requested the receipts as evidence, saying “I am wondering whether Andrew Agyapa Mercer, the Sekondi MP, and Prince Armah, Kwesimintim MP, who were also distributing bulbs in their constituencies, purchased the items from their personal coffers”.
The Airport Ridge Assembly member further bemoaned Mr Darko-Mensah’s “abysmal performance even as a substantive Mayor”, calling for a better reinstatement of the embattled one.
