Ghana, despite our diversity, has survived, albeit surrounded by countries with inconsolable history of civil wars, due to the peace-loving nature of the different groups of people in the country.
Distinct in our unique ways, the worse any particular group has done against the other has been to pen their ‘anger’ in literally pieces and, in recent times, on social media, leaving the bullets and matchets to rest.
This is why the activities of the Homeland Study Group Foundation, the group leading the charge for a separation of the country, should not be tolerated by the government and the people of the country, especially the traditional and political leaders in the Volta and Oti Regions.
Patriotic duty
We at the Daily Statesman believe the time is more than ‘ripe’ for all voices of reason to rise and speak against the divisive agenda of the group.
It is refreshing to hear the likes of the President of the National House of Chiefs and the Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, Togbe Afede XIV, and other chiefs from the region, condemning this treasonable act. This should send a strong signal to the separatist group that Volta Region and for that matter Ghana as a whole is not on their side.
Describing the secessionists’ action as unfounded, Togbe Afede XIV has further called on all Ghanaians to support the government to nip this happening in the bud.
“It requires the support of all of us to ensure that this does not escalate any further… This not something that any of us must condone; it is something that we should all support the government to ensure that it is nipped in the bud so we can continue to live in peace as a nation,” he stated.
While commending the revered chief for such bold statement, is important to draw attention to the fact that MPs from the main opposition National Democratic Congress, which wields the greatest political influence over the people in the region, have a duty to the nation play a critical role in resolving this matter.
These MPs, together with the chiefs and other opinion leaders, owe the nation a divine and patriotic duty to mobilise their people against these so-called secessionists and condemn their act.
With barely two months to elections, one of the greatest disservices we can allow to befall the country is to allow any group to hide behind any evil agenda to hold our security to ransom.
Crack the whip
We also do not believe that this is the time to call for a dialogue. The era where countries negotiate with ‘terrorists’ is long gone and a group that seizes security installations, steal state vehicles and ammunitions and boldly parade them in public light cannot be described any worse than being terrorists.
The Volta Regional Coordinating Council has called for support from all Ghanaians, especially people from the region, to help in fishing out the miscreants. We believe it is a good call, and we urge all Ghanaians to help in this cause.
Ghana is not ready to visit the Nigeria-Biafra days. That is why we also want to call on the state security to, as a matter of urgency, up their game and deal with these miscreants once and for all.
Enough of the nonsense!
