More than 1,000 less privileged individuals in Koforidua in the Eastern Region were treated to warm meals and care this Easter season, thanks to the benevolence of philanthropist Andy Akuffo, executive assistant to the immediate past Executive Director of the National Service Authority, through an outreach programme dubbed “Feed the Street”.
The initiative, which took place across key locations within the New Juaben South Municipality, sought to extend love and support to street children, the elderly, head porters (kayayei), and low-income residents, offering them hot meals, bottled water, soft drinks, and other essentials.
Drive
On the rationale behind the exercise, Mr. Akuffo, who personally funded and supervised the exercise alongside a team of dedicated volunteers, explained that the outreach was driven by his deep sense of community and desire to promote the true spirit of Easter.
“Easter is not merely a time to stay indoors with our families; it’s an opportunity to extend our hands to those in need. I believe the true essence of Easter lies in spreading love in practical ways, ensuring that no one is left behind. After all, our Saviour, Jesus Christ, has consistently shown us the importance of loving others through His actions and teachings,” he noted
The gesture was met with heartfelt gratitude from beneficiaries. “We don’t get these kinds of surprises often. Today, we ate well, and it feels good to be remembered. Many thanks to the organisers, and we pray the good Lord blesses and replenishes as you’ve done to us,” some beneficiaries indicated.
Impactful initiatives
A native of Koforidua, Mr. Akuffo is known for leading several impactful initiatives in the region, including education support programmes, sanitation campaigns, and youth mentorship projects.
Meanwhile, some local authorities and community leaders have commended the gesture. They described it as a “shining example of grassroots compassion”. They said talks were already underway to institutionalise “Feed the Street” as an annual Easter activity, with plans to expand its coverage to neighbouring districts.
