Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice-President and Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, has reinforced his pledge to foster a robust alliance with the Church and Faith-Based Organizations (FBOs) in Ghana for national progress, if elected President in the upcoming December 7 general elections.
During his nationwide campaign tour, Dr. Bawumia emphasised the critical role of deepening the collaboration between the church and the state, saying would significantly expedite national development. He highlighted the necessity to motivate and support churches and FBOs in this endeavour.
Addressing the clergy in Nalerigu, in the North East Region, Dr. Bawumia underscored the pivotal role played by the Church and FBOs in upholding both the spiritual and social fabric of the nation. He stressed that Ghana’s development would face considerable challenges without their contributions.
Golden Age
Dr. Bawumia envisions a new era of cooperation between the church and the state, which he terms the ‘Golden Age of State and Church Relationship’.
He assured that his government would introduce incentives to facilitate the church’s participation in national development initiatives.
He acknowledged the significant contributions of churches and FBOs in various sectors such as education and healthcare.
Dr. Bawumia reaffirmed his stance against taxing churches.
He explained that his previous remarks regarding paying churches were in jest to underscore the importance of supporting them through incentives rather than imposing taxes.
Dr. Bawumia touched on the proposed incentives, suggesting measures such as import subsidies for projects like school and hospital construction. He emphasized the need to view churches and FBOs as internal development partners deserving of similar incentives provided to external development partners.
He highlighted the disparity in treatment between internal and external development partners.
He reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening the partnership between the state and the church to leverage the collective efforts of both entities towards sustainable national development.
