The New Patriotic Party is committed to a peaceful campaign as well as a peaceful process for the election itself, Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia has firmly assured.
Dr Bawumia gave this assurance to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II when he called on the Asantehene yesterday at Manhyia Palace to seek his permission and blessings before embarking on his four-day tour of the Ashanti Region.
The Vice-President said NPP’s 2020 campaign is focused on communicating the party’s inclusive development and interventions in the past three and half years, as well as the government’s forward-marching message for the next four years.
“Your Majesty, I am here this morning to seek your permission and blessing before I start my tour of the Ashanti Region. Our mission is to spread the message of the good works the Akufo-Addo government has done in the past three and half years, and also tell the people our good policies for the next four years, which we believe they will listen and give us four more years to do more,” Dr Bawumia said
He stressed that the 2020 general election is a contest of ideas, and not war, assuring the Asantehene of the NPP’s resolve to stick to that by focusing on the party’s development-oriented messages.
“The election is not war. It is a contest of ideas and that is what we are doing, to tell Ghanaians what we have done and what we will do for them,” he stated.
Protect peace
The Asantehene commended the Vice-President for the path his party has chosen, and reiterated his call on stakeholders to focus on issues ahead of the elections.
He also admonished all parties to ensure that they protect the peace of the country before, during and after the elections.
Otumfuo further called on political parties to exercise vigilance ahead of the December polls and use the right channels to address issues after the general elections.
He said the country has structures that address electoral misunderstanding, and accordingly urged parties who may not be satisfied with the outcome of the elections to use the right procedure in addressing the challenge.
“This year’s election requires the government to campaign and let people know what they have done since they assumed office, like they are currently doing, and also have time to explain them well for people to appreciate what they have done.
“It’s not a fight but a contest of ideas. So all political parties should tell Ghanaians what they have done before and what they can do should they be given power. If it happens, Ghanaians will better appreciate who to vote for during the elections,” he said.
He continued, “We don’t want any fighting issues in the country because this is the only country we have, so I urge them all to engage in an issue-based campaign and Ghanaians will vote for the deserving candidate.”
You will go far
Meanwhile, the Queenmother of the Asante Kingdom, Nana Ama Konadu Yiadom III, has offered special prayers for Vice-President Bawumia and the Akufo-Addo government.
This happened when the Vice-President paid a courtesy call on her prior to his touring of the Ashanti Region yesterday.
In a solemn manner, the Asantehemaa prayed for peace and calm during election 2020, and asked for the blessings of God upon the life of the Vice-President and his entourage.
“You will go far; you will go far; you will go far,” the queenmother said in her prayers for the Vice-President, and called for the protection of God on him and the government.
