Families of the thirteen people who died in the Apeate explosion are demanding compensation packages from Maxam Ghana Limited, the company at the centre of the explosion that occurred in the Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality of the Western Region.
This entrenched position was taken out of fear of being denied any such packages after burial of their relations.
The bereaved families insist they would not allow any mass burial for the loss of their loved ones, until some packages are given them by management of the company whose negligence caused the explosion.
Compensation
Some of the families who spoke to the Daily Statesman said the demand is non-negotiable and that the bodies of their dead relations will remain at the morgue if Maxam fails to pay them compensations.
However, they did not suggest or quote any amount as their compensation package.
“This is Ghana… We will never be compensated after they have been buried. For instance, the gas explosion at Circle in the Greater Accra Region two years ago still points to the fact that some of the surviving victims have still not been compensated for their ordeal and loss of their relations. We are using that bitter experience as a guide,” some of the bereaved families lamented.
Additionally, they maintained that there would be no evidence to show in case they even decide to drag Maxam to the law court to demand compensation after the burial.
The families said they were already traumatised by the explosion and death of their relatives, and not prepared to engage in any legal battle with the explosive supplying company.
It is in light of this that they have urged Maxam to save them from further agony by doing the needful.
