A British national, Naomi Mbelu, was arrested by the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) on March 22, 2025, for possessing a large quantity of cannabis.
According to reports, Naomi Mbelu arrived at KIA on Ethiopian Airline flight 921 from Addis Ababa, but her journey originated from Bangkok. Upon arrival, she was stopped and screened by NACOC officials, who discovered 41 sealed substances in black polythene bags that tested positive for cannabis.
The total weight of the cannabis was 21.38kg, making it a significant seizure. Two other suspects, Joseph Asoa and Isaac Anum Sowah, were also arrested in connection with the incident.
Joseph Asoa was alleged to have arranged for Naomi Mbelu’s visa on arrival and was assisting her out of the arrival hall when they were both apprehended. Isaac Anum Sowah, the driver who arrived to pick her up, was also taken into custody.
All three suspects have been detained by NACOC, and the seized cannabis is undergoing further investigation.
This arrest highlights the ongoing efforts of NACOC to combat drug trafficking and illegal activities at Ghana’s airports. The commission’s vigilance and cooperation with other law enforcement agencies have led to several significant seizures and arrests in recent times.
