Government officials yesterday showcased the massive developmental projects that have taken place in the Eastern Region in the past seven and half years under the government of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Vice-President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
The platform was a townhall meeting held in Koforidua, the regional capital. The event, part of the Ministry of Information’s Regional Townhall Series, offered the opportunity for officials to inform residents about progress in infrastructure, economic development, education, healthcare improvements, among others.
Road infrastructure
Speaking during the event, the Eastern Regional Minister, Seth Kwame Acheampong, indicated that the current administration under President Akufo-Addo had made significant strides in road development compared to the previous administration led by John Dramani Mahama.
“The Akufo-Addo administration has fulfilled its promise to upgrade infrastructure in the Eastern Region,” Mr Acheampong stated, adding: “Since 2017, we have completed 185 kilometers of road infrastructure, exceeding the total accomplished during the NDC’s tenure.”
Mr. Acheampong detailed several major road projects completed in the region, including the rehabilitation of Nkawkaw-Noyem-New Abirem roads, the reconstruction of Koforidua-Asesewa-Abourso roads and the partial overhaul of the Koforidua-Bunso road.
These projects, he said, had significantly improved access and connectivity, reduced travel times, and contributed to regional economic growth.
Economic progress
Speaking on the government’s economic achievements, the Deputy Minister of Finance, Dr. Alex Ampaabeng, discussed recent economic reforms and their impact.
“We have made notable progress in stabilizing the economy and fostering growth. Our policies aim to enhance economic resilience, and create opportunities for businesses and individuals,” Mr Ampaabeng said.
He touched on various economic initiatives, including fiscal policies and sectoral investments. “Our strategy is comprehensive, addressing both short-term relief and long-term sustainability. We are witnessing positive results and remain committed to driving economic development nationwide,” he added.
Agenda 111 initiative
Another focal point was the Agenda 111 initiative, which seeks to construct 111 new hospitals across the country to enhance healthcare delivery. Dr. Anthony Nsiah-Asare, the Presidential Adviser on Health, provided an update on the project’s progress.
“I am pleased to report that 50% of the Agenda 111 hospitals are on track to be completed and handed over soon,” Dr Nsiah-Asare announced.
He highlighted the project’s role in addressing healthcare infrastructure gaps, and improving access to medical services. He stressed that the completion of these hospitals would represent a significant milestone in the government’s commitment to enhancing healthcare and ensuring quality medical services for all Ghanaians.
Govt accountability
The Minister of Information, Fatimatu Abubakar, emphasised the importance of these townhall meetings for government accountability. “These meetings are crucial as they bring governance closer to the people,” she said.
“They offer citizens a chance to engage directly with government officials, ask questions, and receive real-time updates on government projects and policies,” she added.
Madam Abubakar explained that the meetings bridge the gap between the government and the public, fostering trust and ensuring transparency.
“By promoting open dialogue and sharing information, we aim to strengthen our relationship with citizens, which is vital for sustaining democracy and encouraging inclusive development,” she added.
The townhall included a Question & Answers session, allowing residents to express concerns, and seek clarifications. With plans to visit all 16 regions, the government aims to ensure that every citizen can participate in the nation’s development process, reflecting its commitment to transparency, accountability, and inclusive growth.
