The Asamankese District Manager of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Justice Bandoh, has expressed worry over recent increase of meter theft in Asamankese in the Eastern Region and its environs.
He further stated that the stealing of both household and commercial meters installed by the ECG is undermining and retrogressing the operations of the company.
Mr Bandoh, however, added that the situation had been reported to the Police for thorough investigation to make culpable individual face the full rigorous of the law.
Worrying
According to him, the situation has become a problem which is draining them financially.
“It has become a headache for us…Because financially, it is draining us. The thieves usually steal meters that are freshly installed, which is yet to be captured into our system. It is a big challenge for us, and it’s about time it stops,” he said.
He pointed out that about 180 meters, both household and commercial, had been stolen so far, adding that “it is no one’s fault that the ECG installs the meters at an accessible point for meter reading or maintenance”.
To this end, he called on the general public to inform the police, should any individual or group attempts to sell any meter without the authorisation of the ECG. He also advised customers to protect their meters from thieves by using metal cage protective locks.
