The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) in the Eastern Region have destroyed five-tonnes of unwholesome products posing health risk to consumers.
The exercise, which took place at a dumping site located at the outskirts of Koforidua, was under the supervision of FDA officials and environmental health officers. This was to ensure strict and successful exercise such that none of the seized products makes its way back to the market.
Confiscated products
The products that were seized, crushed and destroyed included expired assorted carbonated drinks, unregistered cosmetic products, expired medicines, unregistered herbal products, expired blood collection bags, among others.
Speaking to the media after the exercise, the Regional FDA Head of Enforcement, Joseph Yeboah Gyau, explained that the products were confiscated through surveillance activities conducted at medical warehouses, cosmetic shops, provision shops, pharmacies and medical laboratories across the region.
He said most of the seized items were released on the market during the Christmas festivities, but with vigilance and strict working conditions, the FDA was able to identify these items.
“To ensure all of us our safety, we must be on the look-out for unregistered products not approved by the FDA. Also, before we even buy the registered products we must take time and check the manufacturing and expire dates on every products before we purchase them to ensure our safety,” he said.
Mr Gyau urged the public to be alert and report any illegal sale of products which has not gone through the appropriate process before hitting the market.
