The Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), on Sunday, September 21, 2025, hosted a special and successful edition of its iconic quiz programme, What Do You Know, dubbed “The Veterans Homecoming and Quiz Contest”, at the GBC Studio One in Accra. The event, which started at 12 p.m, was aimed at celebrating the long-standing legacy of one of Ghana’s most intellectually engaging television programmes while reuniting some of its celebrated former contestants and enthusiasts. It was an afternoon of nostalgia, knowledge sharing, and entertainment for both loyal viewers and quiz lovers.
Featured contestants
Among the featured contestants were Mr. Francis Kumadoh, Mr. Seyram Atopley, Mr. Daniel Kojo Aboagye, and Mr. Mubarak Lansa—all of whom returned to relive the excitement of the quiz show that has shaped generations of Ghanaian intellects.
Special guests who graced the occasion included renowned personalities such as Mr. Martin Kpebu, Esq., Mr. George Ayisi, and Mr. Bernard Martei Korley—distinguished alumni of the programme who have each made notable contributions in their professional fields.
The event was hosted by the respected quiz master, Lawyer Dan Afari-Yeboah, whose name is synonymous with the What Do You Know brand. His exceptional mastery of trivia and eloquent presentation style have earned him admiration across decades of broadcasting.
Revive interest and support for the iconic Quiz Show
Emmanuel Bright Atokoh, Head of Chambers at EBA Law Consult, The Rock Chambers, and a former contestant of GBC’s What Do You Know quiz programme, has underscored the importance of the Veterans Homecoming event as a step towards reviving public interest in the show and sustaining its legacy as Ghana’s longest-running knowledge-based television programme.
Speaking after the Veterans Homecoming and Quiz Contest, Mr. Atokoh explained that the rationale behind the initiative was to reconnect former contestants, rekindle enthusiasm for the programme, and mobilize public and corporate support to keep it vibrant.
According to him, What Do You Know has over the years played an invaluable role in shaping intellectual discourse and developing analytical thinking among generations of Ghanaians. “The benefits of this programme to some of us can never be underestimated. We realized there was a need to generate more interest in it and also bring together the old brains—former contestants—to fraternize and reflect on how the programme has helped us in our various endeavours,” he said.
Mr. Atokoh added that beyond rekindling nostalgia, the event also sought to serve as a platform to raise funds and attract sponsors to support the continuity of the programme. “The motivation is to ensure that the programme remains alive and strong, to bring ourselves together as old contestants, and also to solicit assistance and funding from the public,” he stated.
He admitted, however, that organizing the homecoming came with challenges, particularly with financing. “Funding has always been an issue. Before people release funds, it’s not easy. We must acknowledge Collins, who has done a great job to ensure that the programme comes on despite the short publicity period,” he noted, expressing gratitude to those who contributed to making the event possible.
Touching on the future of the programme, Mr. Atokoh called on organizations, individuals, and knowledge enthusiasts to support What Do You Know in every possible way. He emphasized that the show remains a vital platform for promoting critical thinking, historical awareness, and understanding of current affairs.
“This is a knowledge-propagating enterprise—a very insightful one—and everyone is invited to assist and support in any way they can to make sure the programme stays alive,” he said.
He also highlighted the importance of youth engagement, noting that the quiz show continues to inspire both young and old. “It is an exciting programme that cuts across all age groups. The youth who participate today will, in time, also become veterans, carrying on the legacy,” he added.
Daniel Kojo Aboagye win
Lawyer Daniel Kojo Aboagye, a former contestant of GBC’s What Do You Know quiz programme, emerged winner of the 2025 Veterans Homecoming and Quiz Contest.
Speaking to the media after his victory, Mr. Aboagye described the experience as both emotional and refreshing. “It was very fulfilling seeing my colleagues again. Some of us have been away from the contest for almost nine years. I left in 2016, so coming together once more to do what we love best was truly refreshing,” he said.
Reflecting on his performance, he admitted that the contest was not without its tense moments. “During the first round, I fumbled on my major question about the age at which Nkrumah died. But after answering a few others correctly and picking some bonus points, I knew I could catch up in the second round. When we started round two, I managed to build momentum and finish strong,” he recounted.
Mr. Aboagye emphasized the significance of such events in preserving Ghana’s intellectual and cultural heritage. According to him, the What Do You Know platform is more than just a quiz; it is a “knowledge-propagating and educational exercise” that promotes patriotism and learning among Ghanaians, particularly the youth.
“This programme doesn’t just test knowledge; it nurtures it. It encourages people to read, to learn, and to think critically about history, current affairs, and national issues. In our own small way, we are helping the next generation—especially pupils in primary and secondary schools—appreciate knowledge and patriotism,” he noted.
He further called on corporate bodies, institutions, and individuals to support the GBC quiz show through sponsorship and collaboration. “We need sponsors to make What Do You Know more attractive and appealing, especially to the younger ones who will take our place in the future. This is something we need to plan carefully with the production team,” he appealed.
