The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection has called on stakeholders and the private sector as well as civil society organisations to partner with the ministry to help build women support shelters across the country.
The Deputy Minister of the ministry, Lariba Zuweira Abudu, made the appeal at the Ministry’s annual Summit 2022 yesterday in Accra. It was dubbed “Strengthening Resource Mobilisation for Effective Social Service Delivery”.
She disclosed that the development of shelter to camp individuals who suffer domestic violence will serve as a relief for the ministry and the victims.
“A lot of people are not aware the Ministry is huge. There is the need for the Ministry to see increment in its budgetary allocation to help it execute its core mandate of ensuring the welfare of women and children, among others, in the society,” she stated.
Mrs Abudu said the Ministry is putting in place measures to empower individual beneficiaries through the LEAP programme.
She recounted how some of the women and other victims of domestic violence had always run to the Ministry for rescue and shade as well as shelter.
She, however, bemoaned that the ministry which is mandated to take care of the victim has limited resources to provide total support to them.
Efua Sunderland park renovation
Commenting on the welfare of the children under the care of the ministry, the Deputy Minister said the ministry is considering plans to introduce the children to a policy dubbed “child saving”.
She said the ministry is seeking the support of private sector and international bodies to help renovate the Efua Sunderland Park.
The Deputy Minister reiterated the commitment of the ministry to educating children and enlightening them on business and how to raise fund to set up business for their own good.
According to her, it will boost confidence of parents to bring their children to also help the ministry generate revenue to execute its projects.
She indicated that the purpose of the summit was to help the committee members to be abreast of current happenings in the ministry. This, she said, would enable the committee push harder in Parliament issues affecting the ministry for the needed attention and possible redress.
She urged the Ministry to leverage efforts, ideas and inputs from partners and stakeholders to achieve the goal of ‘Strengthening Resource Mobilization for Effective Social Service Delivery’.
The Minister also advised stakeholders to pay critical attention to the resource mobilisation effort, adding that “countries that have recorded major successes in social service delivery made substantial investments in that sector”.
