The Ghana Flying Disc Association (GFDA) over the weekend, hosted an exhibition game at the University of Ghana.
The exhibition game involved students from the University of Ghana, members of the Social Disc-Tance Ultimate Club, athletes from the La 1st Win Ultimate Club, and GFDA management members.
As part of the programme, GFDA volunteer Coach, Mr. Troy Duffield, took student-athletes through some basics of the Ultimate Frisbee game including the tactics of play for both defense and offense as well as the rules.
The programme was part of efforts aimed at introducing the game to the University community. Management of the GFDA further revealed that its plan for disc sports at the University level seeks to ensure that all tertiary institutions across the nation have access to disc sports.
With the success chalked at the exhibition games, the GFDA expressed optimism in hosting the maiden inter-halls Ultimate Frisbee games at the University of Ghana in due course.
In a brief remark, Mr. Desmond Mantey, president of the GFDA, indicated that the organization is looking forward to creating both local and international platforms for student-athletes to exhibit their skills in disc sports and win laurels for Ghana.
He noted that the GFDA looks forward to promoting the game in other Universities across Ghana, adding that it’s a great privilege for the students of the University to be pacesetters in the
Disc Sports, Good Health
Disc sports without a doubt has the potential to enhance the physical and mental health of students. The Ultimate Frisbee game which is a fast-paced non-contact sport presents to the University community and student-athletes a perfect platform to participate in a safe sport that has the ability to enhance the physical, mental and psychological wellbeing of students and athletes at the University of Ghana.
President of the Ghana Flying Disc Association, Mr Desmond Mantey, in a brief remark encouraged students at the university to take disc sports seriously for good health and wellbeing.
The spirit of the game principle, a key tenet of the Ultimate frisbee game was also exhibited as part of the event. The spirit of game principle is based on personal accountability, fellow-feeling and honesty and as part of the rules, all athletes are expected to live by these principles without exception.
Mr. Troy Duffield, a member of the GFDA technical team, also indicated that as athletes play Ultimate frisbee they are expected to be accountable and honest in their interaction with colleagues and opponents on and off the field of play.
He stressed that playing Ultimate certainly enhances personal behavior and attitude, and urged student-athletes to live by the principle both on and off the field of play.
Girls’ Participation in Sports
Girls’ participation in disc sports activities is one of the priorities of the GFDA. In a bid to promote gender equality through disc sports, GFDA ensures that girls are involved in all activities of the organization.
The event saw the participation of an all-ladies team including Madam Ruth Asare from the University of Ghana. A total of 16 women participated in the exhibition game. Mr. Peter Asiedu, Vice President of the GFDA, encouraged the students, especially girls to take disc sports seriously since it has the potential to nurture very essential soft skills like leadership, honesty, accountability, and peaceful coexistence.
The GFDA is actively working to promote disc sports in other sectors of the public and it is the fervent hope of the organization that this event will arouse interest and attract many more youths to take up disc sports games. The GFDA is calling on stakeholders including corporate Ghana to join us as we seek to promote disc sports for youth development in Ghana.
