Women in Me Foundation, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), has called on the government and the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection to rehabilitate and put to good use the Madina Social Welfare Centre.
According to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the NGO, Princess Anita Opokua Addo, the state of the facility is a source of worry, hence the need for an urgent attention to be paid to the facility.
She noted that there is enough space at the facility where new structures can be erected to accommodate more street children.
“There are so many street children out there but due to inadequate infrastructure most of them are not willing to stay at any social welfare centre,” she said.
Donation
Ms Addo made the call when she donated some items to the centre over the weekend.
The NGO donated bags of beans, gari, onions, maize, tubers of yam, indomie, cooking oil, assorted drinks, toiletries, among other essential items.
According to Ms Addo, the donation was made to the centre as part of her NGO’s aim of helping women and children who are vulnerable in the society.
A social worker at the centre, Barbra Bawaare, disclosed that even though the government continues to support the facility that accommodates about 30 inmates, there are still several challenges of the facility that need support to address them.
She therefore called on philanthropists and other individuals to support the centre with clothing, food items, toiletries, finances, among others.
