The first phase of the Green Streets Project commenced over the weekend with the planting of ornamental seedlings in some road medians of Accra.
The Director of the Department of Parks and Gardens, Charles Okine, together with the Technical Director of Forestry at the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, Joseph Osiakwan, led the planting exercise.
Accompanying them were members of the planning committee, Forestry Commission, and some selected workers of the Youth in Afforestation. The team planted Tabebuia pallida (Trumpet Tree) from Spanner, Tetteh Quarshie through the Shiashi -Okponglo stretch to Legon.
The Team irrigated the seedlings together with other ornamental trees, already planted along the shoulders of the roads and uprooted weeds that covered the ground.
The Green Streets Project, which is intended to grow some type of trees to improve the aesthetics of cities and towns would be extended to Kumasi, Tamale and Sekondi-Takoradi.
Green Ghana project
The green streets project is in line with the Green Ghana project introduced in 2021, as part of an aggressive national afforestation and reforestation programme to restore the lost forest cover of Ghana and to contribute to the global effort to mitigate climate change.
The maiden edition was held on June 11, 2021, where an estimated 7 million tree seedlings were planted across the nation.
The tree planting project is expected to create and enhance national awareness of the necessity of collective action toward the restoration of degraded landscapes in the country.
It is also aimed at instilling the values of planting and nurturing trees and their associated benefits amongst the youth to mitigate climate change and enhance livelihoods for rural communities.
The project was introduced after the authorities observed that the country was losing rainforest at an alarming rate in recent years.
The Project also aims at creating green jobs and promoting the growth of the green and circular economy by improving skills and increasing access to finance for youth, Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs).
