The Institute for Economic Research and Public Policy (IERPP) has called for the immediate dismissal of the Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, following what it describes as a “dangerous and misleading” claim about missing containers belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
In a statement released on Tuesday, May 27, 2025 and signed by four prominent academics, Dr. Kwasi Nyame-Baafi, Dr. Frank Bannor, Prof. Isaac Boadi, and Dr. George Domfe, the group expressed deep concern over the Minister’s assertion that 1,357 out of 2,491 uncleared containers destined for ECG had gone missing. The claim, initially presented as evidence of alleged corruption and mismanagement at ECG, has since been discredited.
According to the IERPP, a joint investigative committee later discovered 2,637 of the previously unaccounted-for containers at various terminals within the Tema Port, a figure that not only contradicts but also surpasses the number cited in the Minister’s original report.
“This significant discrepancy raises serious concerns about the accuracy, methodology, and motives behind the Minister’s initial claims,” the IERPP noted.
“In an era where Ghana’s energy sector is grappling with persistent power outages and widespread public frustration, such unverified pronouncements are not only unhelpful—they are dangerous,” the statement added.
Reactionary and counterproductive
The Institute further criticized Jinapor’s approach as “reactionary and counterproductive,” adding that the situation demanded leaders grounded in integrity, competence, and evidence-based decision-making.
“In the interest of accountability and good governance, we urge President John Dramani Mahama to sack the Energy Minister and appoint a more focused individual capable of restoring public confidence and driving real reforms,” the statement read.
IERPP further emphasised that the energy sector—currently one of the most fragile and critical components of Ghana’s economy—should not be subject to what it called “political theatrics.” Instead, the Institute called for leadership that responds to the country’s deepening energy crisis with “facts, not speculation; with strategy, not showmanship.”
