Kennedy Agyapong, Assin Central MP
The Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, has announced that he will contest in the upcoming presidential primaries of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), ahead of the 2024 general elections.
He made this announcement on Net 2 television network on Monday May 16.
The Assin Central MP is known for his support to orphaned constituencies and zeal in containing the NDC anytime the opposition party gets into political overdrive in deprecating initiatives and programmes being undertaken by the Nana Akufo-Addo administration.
His announcement comes as a surprise to many Ghanaians and people within the NPP.
The NPP will be electing its flagbearer next year for the 2024 general elections.
Fairness
Meanwhile, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, recently, advised leadership of the NPP to ensure that the process to elect the presidential candidate was fair.
He emphasised that fairness would reduce the level of divisions that will harm the party’s chances in the next general election.
The President noted that, as it is in the case of every competition, there will be some form of divisions in the party after the internal polls. However, he said, the person to be elected as the flagbearer should have the ability to unite all the fronts.
“I am hoping that a level playing field that allows us to elect our next presidential candidate will also bring us a candidate who can unite our party. Because competition, inevitably, will bring some divisions in the party but we are the ruling party so, there is the responsibility on us to conduct ourselves in a way that reduces cracks.
“Cracks in the NPP can have a reflection on the state, we are the ruling party and if our base which is our party is fractured, that facture can be translated into fracturing the state and nobody wants that,” he added.
