The Legon Lecturers and Professionals for Ken, a group of academics and professionals within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), have formally petitioned the party’s leadership over recent public attacks on presidential hopeful Kennedy Agyapong by Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Chairman Abronye.
Speaking at a brief media interaction on Thursday, May 8, 2025, the group’s chairman, Professor Sulemana Anamzoya, explained that the petition was submitted to the NPP General Secretary, with copies acknowledged by party officials.
“We are here today to officially submit our petition, which has been received by the party. That is the purpose of our presence here,” Professor Anamzoya stated.
According to him, the petition was motivated by growing concerns over Chairman Abronye’s recent public utterances against Kennedy Agyapong, which the group believes threaten the unity and peace within the NPP as the party approaches its crucial presidential primaries.
“We believe the party’s leadership has remained silent for too long,” This is not just about defending an individual — it’s about safeguarding the unity and peace of the party,” Professor Anamzoya said.
The group is calling on the national leadership to promptly intervene and rein in Chairman Abronye, warning that continued silence risks sending the wrong signals and could encourage further internal attacks, ultimately jeopardizing party cohesion.
“What would happen if others decided to respond in kind by attacking other candidates? Would that help or harm the unity of the party?” Professor Anamzoya questioned. “We believe that every candidate should be given the space to engage peacefully, and that it is in everyone’s interest to allow the upcoming Congress to proceed smoothly and fairly.”
Comprising lecturers, accountants, engineers, architects, lawyers, and bankers, the Legon Lecturers and Professionals for Ken group is a vocal advocate for Kennedy Agyapong’s bid to lead the NPP and ultimately contest the 2028 presidential election.
Professor Anamzoya further emphasized the group’s belief in constructive dialogue over retaliation.
“To those who say Kennedy Agyapong is simply getting a taste of his own medicine because of his past strong words toward opponents, we ask: is that really the best path forward? Is retaliating with harsh words and insults the right answer? We believe the party should rise above that,” he stressed.
The group expressed optimism that party leaders, including the Chairman of the Special Electoral Committee and the Council of Elders, who were also copied in the petition, would handle the matter with wisdom and ensure calm is restored within the party.
