
The Movement for Women Inclusivity Africa (M-WIA) has extended warm congratulations to Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang on her nomination as the running mate to Mr. John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), for the upcoming 2024 presidential elections.
In a statement, Mrs. Darko Yaa Boatemaa, President of M-WIA, said “in an era where global leadership standards emphasize inclusivity as a fundamental element in strengthening democracy, M-WIA, as a women’s empowerment advocacy group, applauds the recent national discourse highlighting the importance of increased female representation in Ghana’s political landscape”.
The statement said, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, a former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast and erstwhile Minister of Education, brings unparalleled expertise, countering outdated excuses that undermine women’s capabilities”
“Her nomination challenges the status quo and sets a precedent for other political parties to follow suit. Ghana, often lauded as a beacon of democracy is Africa, should solidify its democratic credentials by placing qualified females at the forefront of political leadership and activities, reflecting contemporary democracy for transformative development. The NDC’s decision serves as a commendable example and a model for other major political parties in Ghana,” the M-WIA statement indicated.
This move, the statement said, is consistent with instances in nations where women had successfully held positions as vice presidents and leaders, including the United States of America, United Kingdom, Israel, Central African Republic, Argentina, Barbados, Liberia, France, among others.
The President of M-WIA expressed her heartfelt congratulations to Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang on behalf of the organization, recognizing her nomination as a significant step towards gender inclusivity and women’s empowerment in Ghana’s political arena.
She stressed in the statement that the nomination of Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang underscores the importance of embracing diversity and inclusivity in leadership roles, paving the way for a more equitable and representative political landscape in Ghana.
