A Takoradi Circuit Court “A” has sentenced Issa Iddrisu, a motor bike rider, to eighteen months’ imprisonment for causing the death of an immigration officer.
This followed his guilty plea and cry to the court, presided over by His Honour Michael Kwadwo Ampadu, to tamper justice with mercy.
According to the motorcyclist, he only wanted to help the victim, Hannah Nwolley, reach her duty post as an immigration officer on time, and not intentionally cause her death.
Iddrisu, who is 32years old, was also fined GH₵720.00 for riding an unlicensed motorbike. He will serve twelve more months in default of payment.
Delivering judgement, Michael Ampadu cautioned the general public, especially security personnel, to always travel with licensed vehicles and motorbikes, stressing that “anyone who ignores the advice does so at his or her own peril”.
The Daily Statesman gathered that on May 3, 2021, Hannah Nwolley, an immigration officer at Half Assini in the Jomoro municipality of the Western Region, boarded Iddrisu’s motorbike to her duty post.
On their way, the rider wrongfully overtook an articulated truck, with registration number GN 1242-21, in front and GT922-14 at the back, resulting in an accident. Mrs Nwolley died on the spot after being run over by the truck’s trailer.
