As part of its port’s growth effort, Meridian Port Services Limited (MPS) will add 15 Gantry Cranes at Terminal Three of Tema Port.
The MPS and the Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Company Limited (ZPMC) have signed a $53.31 million purchasing agreement to deliver the additional 15 Gantry Cranes.
During a meeting with the Minister of Transport, Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, Mohamed Samara, the Chief Executive Officer of MPS, informed the Minister about the deal, which was essentially signed on January 18, 2022.
Several shipping lines were enticed to put MPS Terminal Three to the test as a prospective transshipment hub, he said, adding that MPS passed the test and was committed to continuing to provide top services and the platform to connect its clients to important shipping routes across the world.
“The wharf at MPS Terminal Three is currently equipped with eleven STS cranes and two Mobile Harbour Cranes and 29 eRTG yard cranes; with the increase in volumes (Gateway & Transshipment),” he said.
Mr Samara added that the 15 additional Gantry Cranes (3 STS and 12 eRTG), with the capacity to service the world’s largest container ships, would allow them to meet the anticipated trade growth brought on by the potentials of the emerging Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCTA).
Successful partnership
Mr Michael Luguje, Director-General of the Ghana Ports and Habour Authority (GPHA), expressed his delight in the successful partnership between GPHA, Bolloré Transport & Logistics, and APM Terminals in MPS. He noted that the master plan for the development of the Port of Tema’s containerized cargo was being implemented effectively.
He praised the MPS for finishing the project’s construction and equipping ahead of schedule.
He said the investment in the Tema Port Expansion had so far yielded great results, with service standards comparable to the best in the world, and that the GPHA will continue to work with the company to ensure that the positive consequence of their collaboration was maintained.
Ghana has taken the lead in the sub-region with investments in its ports, according to the Minister of Transport, who added that the country is growing into a hub with modern infrastructure, sophisticated equipment, and effective service delivery.
Mr Asiamah stated that the increased equipment investment demonstrated that the MPS Tema Port Expansion Project partners were committed to continuing enhancement of services provided to the Port Community and Ghana as a whole.
He emphasised the importance of such investments in the economy having a positive socio-economic impact, and urged MPS to keep up the good job and bring more of these advantages to the country.
