Dr Mahamudu Bawumia
Endorsements for former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, are swelling across the country as the party gears up for its January 31, 2026 presidential primaries. This growing surge of support, according to a news release issued by Dennis Miracles Aboagye, Communications Director for the Bawumia Campaign Team, reflects a deep and widespread confidence in Dr. Bawumia’s readiness to lead the party back into national contention.
Support
The release explained that declarations of support had been pouring in from all corners of the party’s structure. It said electoral area coordinators, constituency executives, former Members of Parliament, youth organisers, campaign strategists, and grassroots mobilisers had all openly aligned themselves with Dr. Bawumia, forming what the campaign describes as “a consistent nationwide pattern of belief in his winnability, vision, and experience”.
It noted that across several constituencies, coordinators were pledging overwhelming levels of support, with some areas recording endorsements that approach near unanimity. The release highlighted that in constituencies such as Prestea Huni Valley, New Juaben South, Akuapem North, and Mfantseman, coordinators had rallied almost entirely behind Dr. Bawumia, while in Assin
South and other areas, party structures had signaled similar unity in his favour. Many polling station executives, it added, consider him the only aspirant capable of energising the base and appealing broadly to the Ghanaian electorate.
Groundswell
The groundswell is said not to have been limited to coordinators alone. The release stated that former constituency executives in places such as Mfantseman had publicly endorsed Dr. Bawumia after what they described as a careful reflection on the party’s political trajectory. It also pointed out that youth organisers in the Central Region had pledged to throw their full weight behind him, with promises to spearhead a vigorous grassroots campaign in the days ahead.
According to the release, these groups believe his national exposure and experience, grounded in his tenure as Vice President and as the party’s 2024 presidential candidate, make him the most prepared and most marketable contender the NPP can present in the 2028 elections.
The momentum, as captured in the release, has also been reinforced by endorsements from constituency executives in several regions. In Mpohor, the Constituency Chairman, Razak Dadzie, reportedly promised an emphatic victory for Dr. Bawumia, cautioning delegates against what he described as the mistake of overlooking the party’s strongest candidate.
In Nkwanta South, the First Vice Chairperson, Pius Amewu, reaffirmed the constituency’s commitment to support Dr. Bawumia, stressing that he remained the only figure capable of steering the NPP back to power.
Other executives, including Agona East’s 2024 parliamentary candidate, Hannah Asamoah, urged delegates to remain consistent, arguing that strong political movements do not change direction at every turn. Executives in Akan, Asikuma Odoben Brakwa, and several other constituencies, the release noted, have also praised his leadership qualities and declared support for his bid.
Individual declarations
Beyond these broad internal endorsements, the release captured a number of significant individual declarations, including defections from figures who previously supported rival aspirants.
In Asunafo South, the Deputy Constituency Secretary, Eric Agyemang, who once played a key role in the Kennedy Agyapong campaign, publicly crossed over to support Dr. Bawumia, even withdrawing past criticisms and admitting that earlier claims made against the former Vice President were based on falsehoods.
Former Kade MP, Ofosu Asamoah, who served as Campaign Manager for Kwabena Agyapong, is also reported to have switched his support after reassessing developments within the party. The release further mentioned endorsements from New Juaben South MP, Michael Okyere Baafi, former Akwatia MP, Mercy Adu-Gyamfi (Ama Sey), and several long-serving strategists and former executives who believe Dr. Bawumia represents the party’s strongest path toward electoral victory.
Electability
In explaining the reasons behind this broad support, the release emphasised that party members across the country consistently point to Dr. Bawumia’s electability, national marketability, innovative ideas, and forward-looking vision. His digitalisation initiatives, economic proposals, and commitment to building a party that is both competitive and caring have been repeatedly cited as qualities that distinguish him as the right leader for the moment.
According to the release, these factors collectively position him as the unifying force the NPP needs to mount a formidable challenge in 2028.
The news release further noted that the endorsements captured so far represented only a fraction of the expressions of support emerging from constituencies nationwide.
