The parliamentary candidate of the opposition National Democratic Party (NDC) in the Nsawam-Adoagyiri constituency, Selorm Fummey Philibert, was nowhere to be found during a parliamentary debate organised by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in the area.
Though Mr Selorm, per earlier engagement with the Commission, had agreed to take part in the debate, he was missing on the day of action, leaving the NCCE with no choice than to proceed with only the NPP candidate for the area, Frank Annoh Dompreh.
The debate was to afford the candidates the opportunity to explain to the constituents their plans for the area in five different key sectors, namely security, education, health, agriculture and environment
Disappointment
The Nsawam-Adoagyiri Municipal Director of NCCE, Emmanuel Otoo, expressed disappointment at the refusal of the NDC candidate to show up after series of discussions with him.
He disclosed that series of meetings were held with all the candidates at every step of the way, including the selection of appropriate date for the debate.
The incumbent MP and the governing NPP candidate for the area, Frank Annoh Dompreh, also expressed disappointment at his colleague’s refusal to honour the invitation.
He indicated that this is the second time an NDC parliamentary candidate had failed to show up for the NCCE debate organised in the constituency.
He said the development is a clear indication that the NDC is not serious for the parliamentary contest.
He however urged the NCCE to regularly organise such debates to enable them account for their stewardship to the constituents.
Peace
The Municipal NCCE boss admonished the electorate to follow laid down measures by the EC in conducting a credible and peaceful election, urging them to also eschew violence.
He also expressed appreciation to the NPP MP and the populace for honouring the invitation.
Supt Marian Adu Osei Owusu, Municipal Police Commander, assured the people of adequate security at the various polling stations to ensure peace and orderliness during the election.
She warned that the police would not countenance any form of violence, and called on all stakeholders to play their roles responsibly. She also prayed for peace beyond the elections.
