Dr. Dacosta Aboagye, the newly appointed Chief Executive of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), has unveiled his ambitious four-point vision aimed at revolutionizing the healthcare system in the country.
He said this at the commissioning of a new ultramodern NHIS district office complex in Kumawu, Ashanti Region.
Firstly, Dr. Aboagye aims to eradicate illegal charges at healthcare facilities. He emphasised the importance of providing accessible and affordable healthcare to all citizens, without the burden of additional fees.
Secondly, he plans to reduce NHIA ICT costs over time by implementing the issuance of Ghana Cards to children aged six to 14. This strategic move not only streamlines administrative processes, but also ensures that younger generations have access to essential healthcare services.
Dr. Aboagye also intends to enhance the NHIS Benefit Package by incorporating an annual basic medical health check for Scheme members. This proactive approach to healthcare aims to promote preventive measures and early detection of diseases, ultimately reducing the financial burden on patients and the healthcare system.
He reaffirmed his commitment to institutionalizing mandatory health insurance for all visitors entering Ghana. This initiative, he stressed, not only prioritizes the health and well-being of visitors, but also strengthens the overall healthcare infrastructure of the country.
The NHIA boss expressed gratitude for the unwavering commitment of NHIA staff. He encouraged them to continue their diligent efforts in serving the community.
He also emphasised the importance of maintaining the newly commissioned office building, reflecting the organization’s commitment to excellence in service delivery.
Appreciation
The visionary plans received resounding applause from the people of Kumawu, NHIA staff and the general public.
Particularly noteworthy was Dr. Aboagye’s pledge to provide NHIA staff with Life Insurance Policies, demonstrating his dedication to their welfare and security.
For his part, the Kumawuhene, Barima Sarfo Tweneboah Kodua, thanked Dr. Dacosta, and lauded him on his appointment as the new Chief Executive of the National Health Insurance Authority.
Barima Sarfo Tweneboah Kodua also appreciated President Akufo-Addo and Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia for honouring the people of Kumawu with the pledge.
He recounted how instrumental Prof. Adu Gyamfi, the previous NHIA Board Chair, had been working in getting the building started as far back as 2019.
He described Prof. Gyamfi as a selfless individual who thought well about the development of his hometown. The current Board Chair of the NHIA, Dr. Ernest Kwarko, also pledged the support of the board to ensure a successful tenure for the new CEO.
Present at the ceremony were the MP for the area, District Chief Executive and institutional heads from the government agencies. The rest were the current and previous NHIA Board Chairmen and other officials of the Authority.
