The Minister of Communications and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu Ekuful, has served notice that the deadline for the nationwide SIM card registration exercise will not be extended. She reiterated that the registration exercise ends on July 31, 2022.
The Minister made this announcement when she addressed a consumer forum organised by the National Communications Authority in Kumasi. It was dubbed “Ensuring a Safe and Secured Telecommunications Environment for the Consumer”.
She disclosed that over 12 million people had linked their SIM cards to their National Identification Cards (Ghana Card).
“I am encouraging persons who have not yet registered to do so. Looking at the number of individuals that are through with the exercise, it is convincing to note that the exercise is for our own safety,” she added, charging service providers to ensure consumer satisfaction and safety at all times.
Protection
To ensure customer satisfaction and protection, she said government had provided policies like the SIM card registration, whilst 760 towers had been built. She added that 325 of the towers are currently working to improve consumer service in poor service areas.
The Director General of the National Communications Authority, Joe Anokye, also encouraged the general public to be responsible consumers in order to avert the issues of cyber fraud.
According to him, the forum was not just in fulfilment of the Electronic Communications Act, but also host consumers and services providers to ensure satisfaction and quality service production.
Mr Anokye further appealed to the general public to permit service providers to build network masks, saying “the masks would improve services, and do not emit radiations more than the global standards, hence do not cause cancer as speculated”.
“I will plead with all to cooperate with service providers on this issue because it will aid good service production and delivery,” he added.
The forum saw in attendance representatives of the National Identification Authority, MTN, Vodafone, AirtelTigo and other service providers, traders’ unions, SHS and tertiary students, religious bodies, transport unions, Ghana Disability Federation, among others.
