Residents of Otrokper, a farming community near Asesewa in the Upper Manya Krobo District of the Eastern Region, are appealing to the government, Non-Government Organisations and other philanthropists to come to their aid in helping them solve the water crisis faced by the community.
According to the residents, the only source of water for domestic purposes is an unhealthy well, stating that they are aware of the health risks associated with drinking from the well. That nonetheless, the residents say they have no choice since it is the only source of water in the whole community.
Appeal
A resident, Mavis Teye, explained that even though the well holds a large volume of water, it is unable to withstand the pressure on it since it is the only source of water in the area.
She added that the well does not provide enough water for the community, especially during the dry season.
Adding his voice to the call, the Assembly Member for the area, Joshua Teye Padi, indicated that they have two boreholes which have all been broken down. He noted that all his attempts to get the District Assembly to fix them had not yielded any positive results.
He therefore called on the general public to assist the community to get other sources of potable water.
“Those boreholes produce quality water but it’s so unfortunate they have broken down. The only one we all depend on is the unhealthy well, but, as the residents said, there comes a time when there is too much pressure on it and it is unable to support us. We urgently need assistance for more,” he stressed.
