The Director-General of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), John Ofori-Tenkorang, says as of October 2022, his outfit had made pension payments of about GHC3.4billion.
According to Dr. Tenkorang, the payments include pension payments, survivors’ benefits and lump sums, which are one-time payments made to SSNIT contributors who are not yet pensioners but are rendered vulnerable.
Speaking exclusively with the Daily Statesman on the sidelines of an Operation and Benefits Conference held in Koforidua yesterday, the Director-General said despite the tough economic environment, SSNIT continues to pay a significant amount of money to its members, which in turn gets pumped into the country’s economy to help pensioners survive.
Significant developments
He indicated that the Trust had been able to increase its self-employed membership from 14,000 during the turn of the year to 18,000, which is a 30 percent increment.
Dr. Tenkorang attributed the sharp increment to the consistent stakeholder sensitization exercise by the Trust nationwide.
“We rolled out an electronic platform about two months ago, and it is gradually bringing success. We’ve been able to increase our self-employed members, which was achieved before rolling out our electronic system. With our electronic platform in place and working, we are looking to bring in about a million self-employed workers in a year or two,” he added.
He disclosed that over eight million working Ghanaians are either not contributing to the SSNIT pension scheme or not on the scheme at all. He said the Trust is working tirelessly to bring all of them on board to secure their retirement.
