The Progressive Alliance of Ghana (PAG) has expressed profound sorrow over the tragic death of six young Ghanaians during a security service recruitment exercise at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra, describing the incident as a painful reminder of the country’s deepening youth unemployment crisis.
In a statement signed by its 2024 Presidential Candidate, Dr. John Kpikpi, the party extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wished speedy recovery to those injured in the stampede. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the five individuals receiving intensive care and the twelve others in critical condition. May they all receive full healing and restoration,” the statement said.
The PAG lamented that the tragedy was not an isolated event but a reflection of a much larger national challenge—the growing frustration among thousands of unemployed young Ghanaians desperate for opportunities to build meaningful lives. “The sheer number of applicants who turned up at El Wak is not merely a statistic; it is a loud cry for hope from a generation that feels left behind,” it noted.
According to Dr. Kpikpi, the heartbreaking event should serve as a national wake-up call for the government to confront the unemployment crisis head-on. He urged the state to adopt bold, transparent, and sustainable measures to create decent jobs and empower the youth.
“The time has come for government to take decisive steps that prioritize job creation through industrial growth, private sector empowerment, and the modernization of agriculture. Beyond policy documents and speeches, government must act decisively to expand opportunities, support entrepreneurship, and restore confidence in the economy,” the statement emphasized.
The Progressive Alliance of Ghana further called on authorities to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy to ensure accountability and prevent future occurrences.
Dr. Kpikpi further urged Ghanaians to honour the memory of the victims through a renewed national commitment to build a society that offers every young person a fair chance to work, thrive, and contribute meaningfully to Ghana’s progress.
